DIY Friday- Wind-chimes & A Birthday....

I saw this on Facebook so I do not know where the original source is from...But isn't this beautiful... I just had to make one for my collection with a twist of my own.....It is the perfect thing to work on today...something magical  & ancient looking......wrapping the wires around the sea glass was therapeutic & thoughtful ...a bit sad...... especially today....
Today is my Best Friend's birthday...she is not here this year...but she is pain free & peaceful & you can't ask for a better gift....I will bet she is watching the latest episode of Downton Abbey...kicked back & enjoying it...it is just those who love her back here, miss her more than ever... but  so grateful for the time we had... Here she is in San Francisco...She told me she finally made it for the Summer of Love...just a few decades late... she was such a riot...

Happy Birthday Soror...
Stevie & I love you & miss you so much...
When you hear the Wind-Chimes, it will be me saying hello  ....

The Magic of Mushrooms....

I have become a fan of the mushroom...years ago you could not have gotten me to eat one...but then I got cancer & discovered how beneficial they were in fighting the disease & keeping it away...

Miso soup with tofu, Shiitake mushrooms ( my fav), seaweed, carrots & broccoli was & still is a staple..all cancer fighting foods....I still enjoy this soup....in fact I made some today with sweet white miso tho I prefer barley miso over all...... I do not know of anything that tastes as earthy & natural as mushrooms do...
Just like hemp, they have been some of the most underused products of nature....But knowledge about the uses & benefits of  this star of Nature is fortunately is becoming more widespread now...
They are now being used to clean up some of our most destructive catastrophes in our environment... cleaning up toxins which would have taken hundreds of years can now be done in a few years with mushrooms...
Mycologists are suggesting the use of fungi in Japan to clean up & manage the Fukushima radiation crisis ...Lets hope they listen....Mushrooms are what breaks down the logs, stumps into that humus soil in the forests nourishing trees & in turn being nourished by trees to continue the cycle......  They really are magical....

My girlfriend & I were talking the other day about wild mushrooms & how we both would like to take a field class to learn to identify the different types....So we are going to do that this summer... Here is another video by Rosemary Gladstar that I think you will enjoy....
A big thanks to my daughter Melody for the use of her Forest Mushroom photos...

DIY Friday- Nature Molds

I found this artist through my friend Winnie at Altered Alchemy... Her name is Gayle Dowell who shared how she makes Nature Molds... I loved finding this!!! When I read the post, I was out the door...It was a good time because we had a lull from the snow so I was able to get into the woods a bit......

I found  items like miniature pine cones, a pine tassel, a fir stem, a plant that looked like a miniature cat-n-nine tail.....I got my air dry clay out & followed Gayle's instruction of pressing the clay with the plant material between two pieces of glass....then I let it air-dry for a couple of days..Now I have a permanent mold to use....

When you push the polymer clay into the mold this is what you get.... A mini picture of Nature!

 I did three practice pieces....
The two smaller ones are 1"x 2"  the larger one is 3" x 1"

The mold for this piece broke ....I got too anxious didn't let it dry long enough...
But I was able to get this piece out of it...

Some paint, then a wash of walnut stain & I am one happy camper....
I have been looking for something to put in my bathroom that had a woodland feel....I plan on making some tiles from these for the wall.... so stay tuned for that...
Thanks to Gayle Dowell for sharing her technique for these molds....Be sure I check out her blog here ......Now I really cannot wait for spring!!!!

DIY Friday- Meditation Table: Part 1

So here we are with part one of the table... I was inspired by the old factory carts that people use for coffee tables now...  So I thought why not a mini version...I still have the finishing touches but I wanted to post what we have done so far...I am really happy how it is coming out especially since the Hubby has added his artistic talent to it...Everything is recycled material we had around the home... It is 3 ft by 2ft & about 9 inches off the ground...it will make a great meditation table...

If you remember I started with this door...that was going to be a craft table...but because of the top part so so badly deteriorated I decided to salvage what I could from it...
I ended up with 6 pieces of wood about 2 ft in length as well as the two inner panels which I will use for another project..... I decided on the meditation table at this point.....
I used a thin piece of plywood to hold the six pieces together...instead of stripping or painting the bottom down I decided to decoupage with some tissue paper...So much faster & easier ...
& cute I think...
Then I put four strips of wood around the edges
which hang about an inch below the bottom.... These were screwed in , then I filled in the holes with wood putty...after they dry I am sanding them smooth then aging the edges to match the center.. The Hubby also made me four iron corners out of angle iron to hide the seams at the corners...

I had two cast iron wheels that seemed to be made for this project..So my heavy metal guy made an axle out of a pipe & two wood braces to hold it...He is getting two big Hex bolts to put in the ends of the pipe to finish it up.... I want to add a single leg to the back but not sure what that will be yet...
Now on to part two...the finishing touches....
the wood carvings & beeswax...
So stay tuned for the final reveal!!

Have a great weekend!!
