Stocking Up.....

Yarrow
It has been a busy two weeks...with the vegetable garden...babysitting Grandpets ...But my focus right now is on the medicinal & culinary herbs.....So I have been harvesting alot of plant material.....Dandelion, Plantain, Red CloverYarrow, Lemon Balm, Feverfew, Roses & I came across a Mullein plant as well in my wanderings.....I was happy to see that because they had all but disappeared around our place.......I am fortunate to have so much growing wild around my home....& growing in my herb garden....lots of harvest with the culinary herbs as well.....Once you have grown your own buying in the store is just not the same...
The thing about herbs is this......they are just so easy to grow....even in pots if you don't have land...!!  One warning about Lemon Balm...plant it where you don't mind it wandering...because it will roam everywhere!!! My stone wall has disappeared in this garden...so I need to do some transplanting to its own area...
Lemon Balm
***As with any plant please read all warnings before use especially if you are pregnant, nursing or on blood thinners***
Tinctures
Most of the tinctures & oils are simple recipes...Just  fill your jar with plant material.....I did chop the Plantain up in my food processor......then add your vodka or brandy or your carrier oil...I use olive oil tho I did make some rose & coconut oil just to see how that would turn out... then fill them to the very top....I try to make sure all of the plants are covered.....slide a knife down through to get rid of any air bubbles & seal....I am leaving mine to cure for at least 12 weeks in a dark closet for the tinctures...the oils will be about 3-4 weeks in the sun then strained & put in a dark closet as well... I will be making salves from some of the oil in a couple of weeks......I used the migraine formula of Lemon Balm & Feverfew found here......I have provided links on each plant name above to read more about them...

Oils
What I didn't put up in jars are drying for teas on the herb rack or wrapped in newspaper laid out on the floor upstairs in the storage room where it dark, warm & dry....

Now I am starting on the roses....today I am making Rose Petal jam... I have a few antique Roses that are very fragrant so it should make a nice jam..... I will let you know how that comes out... as well as a few other Rose recipes I am trying this year...  More later...

Have a great week...

DIY Batik Wall Hanging...

I saw this Batik Dye Wall Hanging on Pinterest the other day & thought I would give it a try....Usually I post on Friday what I PLAN on doing that weekend but sometimes I get sidetracked so I decided to try this then post....

This took some time but I enjoyed it...
You need the following...

  •  A piece of fabric...I would suggest something lighter than what I used which was heavy cotton...
  • Pencil
  • Beeswax
  • A paintbrush... you will throw it away after...
  • Dye of your color choice...

I drew out my design on the fabric.....Heat the beeswax up in a double boiler.........you want it very hot to soak into the fabric.....So be careful when you begin to paint.... This is the part that took time...

That is why I suggested a lighter fabric...so the beeswax absorbs all the way through....Because I used a heavy cotton, I had to hang it in the window & trace over the lines from the back or else the dye would absorb everywhere...

After the beeswax dried, I dipped the cloth into the dye bath ...for this I dipped it maybe a few minutes then I laid it out & dropped straight dye onto some areas...I rinsed out some areas of the cloth so I ended up with a mottled look....like faded jeans...
Then it was out to dry in the sunshine...
After it is thoroughly dry,  you place paper towels over the fabric ..I had to place them under as well...& with a hot iron go over it to melt the wax which the paper towels absorb leaving your design visible...
& Voila!!!
This reminds me of cut off shorts...my design did not come out as clear as the original version but I like the faded look...
Now to decide if I want to add anything more...fabric background, beads, macrame, grommets.......decisions decisions!!   So as soon as I finish it I will post the results...

Oh  I wanted to add an update to my post on the Lunar Moth based on questions I received from some of you.....first I was wrong....it is a He not a She...you can tell by the antenna..the males have more hair on them to pick up the pheromones the female releases into the air......He dies right after they mate & she does as soon as she lays up to 200 eggs.....They are not only rare but are now an endangered species thanks to all that wonderful toxic pollution released into Nature....So if you see one enjoy every minute...there may come a time when we will no longer see them.
Have a great week everyone!!

The Luna Faerie....

I believe that faeries exist...They are very elusive... Some of them live by the Moon but only for a short time...such as this Luna beauty....
If you look closely you can see her...I can see a smiling face in the cream colored area....

Luna moths are rare to see as they are only out at night & only live for about a week...They only live to reproduce & have no mouth so they do not eat...Isn't that strange...

Folklore gives some symbolic meaning to seeing a Luna moth...it can signify rebirth, new beginnings & transformation as they are creatures that can completely transform into a new being..The  Luna Moth is nocturnal  gravitating toward moonlight to orientate itself in the night... a  seeking out the light...aka truth & knowledge... when in darkness..
Whatever the meaning...it was a treat to wake up to see her gracing our door....After taking a few pictures...I sent her on her way....the girls were looking at her as a snack...
