Veterans Day 2013

Today is Veteran's Day....
A special day when we say thanks...but is it enough...
I know what I will say today will not be popular... not the proper public show...but that is ok  it needs to be said...

I cannot thank our Vets & soldiers enough for all they do...I have three of them that I love with all my heart .. . My Dad, Hubby & my Son..... I have family ancestors that have fought in every war  up to Korea.... I have over 200 days left to worry until my son is out of the Army.....his chance of deployment now at 80%.....I pray he will never be sent over seas...
But because I feel so strongly about plight of our Veterans, I feel  the need & have the right to say this as a wife & mother..... So here goes...
I wanted to interview the Hubby for this today but he didn't want me to tell people how he really felt, he thought he would be criticized for it......& from some he probably would.... Because it is not only the effects of war that effect a Vet but things people have said & done here stateside as well...

So here is my question.... Why do we have parades, put up plaques, fly flags then the rest of the year ignore the problems that plague our Vets on a daily basis???? Has the quality of a Veterans life improved since last year at this time???
Honoring our Vets is all well & good but for some I think it is a feel good thing for themselves to do the public performance of caring...but the proof is in the pudding... What are you doing AFTER...out of the sight of the masses...
Do you contribute to organizations that help Vets with PTSD, homelessness & suicide...Do you vote for elected officials that vote against the much needed welfare for our Veterans...such as the possibility of  cutting SNAP which will effect 900,00 Vets & their families Do you speak out against going into needless wars which causes physical & psychological damage to our soldiers as they deal with stresses & pain every single day caused by wartime... Do they vote against funding services that help Veterans??? or voting against bills to rebuild the infrastructure  of our country...(a security issue as well.) that would create thousands of jobs for Vets..or voting against raising the minimum wage???? This all effects Veterans....  If you are going to be PRO defense -Pro war...you better be ready to step up to the plate & do the right thing to those who served this country...
To see how your Representative is voting go here

34.000 Vets are waiting over a year to hear about Disability benefits  at least 50,000 are waiting over two years... This is disgraceful....I have no doubt whatsoever that many more Vets need to be on disability...but when your dealing with PTSD,  many in our society think that if you can't see anything wrong they do not need to have a "free handout" or "entitlement".......  Know any people that think that way???  I do... many of our Veterans suffer in silence so that they won't be condemn even though the have earned every penny of it......Veterans will tell other Vets to never tell anyone you get a disability.... Do you think that is right ??? Do you think that is honoring a Veteran??

1 in 4 vets are homeless...they live in poverty, unemployment is at 10% for the 20's age bracket...
if they are homeless it makes it hard to gain employment or disability because you need an address so they continue to spiral down...Places like WalMart offer employment to Vets......but at the wage they pay, workers still have to go on welfare...The homeless you see panhandling...it could be a Vet.... give them a couple of dollars... it may be the only bright spot of the day...some will say "I am not going to give them money to drink away"...well... how do you know what they will do with it....it may be for a meal... the only meal they get that day.... it is not going to hurt anything except give some comfort to some one who needs it & if anything  its good for your soul....

Suicides are still very  high...higher than most think because they do not know about all of them...some are considered "accidents" so are never recorded....&  even tho resources have gotten so much better  the numbers are just too high... Our Vets are dealing with demons we as civilians will never fully understand...HBO will be airing a documentary tonight on this issue for Vets...
Crisis Hotline Veterans Press 1
if you can't watch it tonight... please do so through other means....

So what can you really do to honor our the men & woman who currently serve as well as our Vets?
Many things & it doesn't have to be big things... It's the small things can make a HUGE impact...

Write to your elected officials... better yet email your elected official when bills that benefit Vets come up...encourage then to vote in favor of helping Vets...

In my opinion, the best way  to honor & respect our Vets is to speak out against any more war...
Become ANTI-War....It's preventive medicine &  very cost effective especially in the  quality of human lives... Because the real cost of war is way too high....
The President has promised to help our Heroes , Our Vets ..
especially the 9/11 Vets, who have served multiple deployments, who desperately need our help right now...
Home, jobs, health care, quality of life for Vets will in turn help the country...
I  for one am going to hold him to it....
Thank you for hearing me out today...

Well said and an AMEN Sister! Yes, Linda, the hypocrisy of some... and the Government not Honoring their part of the Contractual Agreement made with the Old Veterans after they've already done their part with Honor is something that chaps my hide too. Everyone enjoys the benefits of the Sacrifices made and the Freedom it has afforded Americans, the very least that can be done for our Veterans and those presently Serving is to give them due Respect and what they Earned and were Promised in their Contracts upon Enlistment {or in The Man's case being Drafted during Vietnam Era and then making a long Honorable Career of Military Service and fighting in many more Wars and becoming 100% Disabled as a result of Service Related Injuries}. Our Vets don't ask for much and most are so humble about their Sacrifices and Heroism... so they need those of us that will speak out on their behalf and preserve their Dignity by demanding what they deserve and earned. Hugs... Dawn... The Bohemian
