Wednesday Women - Helen Nearing & Scott too....

Today I was splitting wood & stacking it.......It felt really good to do that...while I was swinging away with the maul, my old life philosophy filtered back in & with it the Nearings... even tho this Wednesday Women post is titled Helen Nearing, you cannot separate these two....they are a packaged deal....You cannot think about one without the other...

She is the Mother of the Back to the Land Movement....He is the Father... ..Together they laid the blueprint of sustainable living...I admire these two greatly..The lived their convictions & philosophy for over 60 years...leaving New York City in 1932 for Vermont  then eventually Maine...They educated many people who sought to live a simpler natural life....often being credited with awakening the back to the land movement of the Hippies...

The adage "you are never two old" must have had these two on mind....At the ages of 48 & 69, in 1952, they built their final homestead in Haborside Maine where they lived out their lives...Helen died in 1995 at the age of 91 in a car accident...Scott chose to commit suicide by starving at the age of 100 in 1983....
They were activists, pacifists, vegetarians, raw food advocates, socialists, anti war protesters...they even signed a petition along with 400 others to refuse to pay taxes to protest the Vietnam War...
In our tough New England environment, they were among the first to use greenhouses & cold frames to grow food year round.....

 They wrote The Good Life...

It was one of the first books I read on living off the land.....I very highly recommend anyone interested in getting closer to a simpler way of living...and even if you do not go off the on your grid, there is a blueprint to at least elevate the impact of society on your life... They built many stone houses which they are known for....& they were doing this well into their 70's & 80's.... This is the home, they built, Forest Farm, in Harborside, Maine...

Two other books I recommend starting with along with the Good Life...
Simple Food for the Good life.... as well as Loving & Leaving the Good Life...in which Helen talks about her life with Scott and his death...
Other informational sites you might enjoy....

The Walden Woods Project  - documents on many of their political beliefs....

Even if you do not have plans to ever live off the grid, the information that they have given us enables us to at least become less dependant on those who care little for our welfare... It is a legacy that I am grateful they have left us...

Thank you so much for introducing me to the Nearings. Their life sounds fascinating and well worth looking into since I AM going to live to be 100 myself! I am now on a mission to find the books you mention.

Thanks so much Linda! I guess because of growing up in Canada, I didn't even know about the Nearings. Can't wait to get the books...

I remember looking at pictures of the Nearings pushing and shoving those rocks around and wondering how they did it at their age.
Thanks for reminding me of them.
