Happy Birthday to John Fogerty..

 Who turns 68 today....
Still going strong on tour this year...

My favorite song by him when he was with CCR is "Fortunate Son"
which talked about the factors that determined whether you went to Vietnam or not...
I think it is appropriate that Memorial Day
coincides his birthday this year
as well as the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War....Who are we are willing to sacrifice
for any war.....John will tell you...

It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no millionaire's son, no,
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no
Yeah, some folks inherit star spangled eyes
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Oh, they only answer, more, more, more, yoh
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no military son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one

In Honor ...

Of those who died fighting for this country....
This is the 50th anniversary of the official start to the Vietnam Conflict....
How many have there been since then....
Lets end all wars now....

The Magic of Moss

The Hubby & I like to garden with as many natural elements as possible...One thing I have been looking into more is moss...they are a plant that gets it nutrients from the air as they have no roots...

All they require is a firm bed, acidic soil and moisture, making it perfect for the places that are in the shade & under trees...

I love how it softens the look of stones and bricks...Isn't this Peace sign cool.....

The texture is great & covers areas
that plants may not grow well in....

I can think of a few people who would like this!

It enhances the beauty of stone ...

It gives things a magical, woodland look....

Here is a tutorial in which you can
I  came across this blog that has lots of good information...I have alot of moss around my home so I will be using some of the advice I have read & begin moving some into the Fairy Garden...the weather conditions in Maine lately seem to be perfect for starting some moss gardens...lots of rain...

I am also starting some pots so
I will post the results later on the pots
 & the gardens...So fingers crossed

Have a great Sunday!

Are You Ready?

I am already in "stocking up" mode....
I am constantly looking for better ways to store food that do not require technology or things that can be used in emergencies...
So I found this site...Homestead Survival ...
It has some great ideas...some you have probably seen on Pinterest...

onions hing in nylons...just tie a knot as you add the onion...Hang in a cool, dry dark place...just snip them off as needed!!  Is that cool or what!

This idea is great for emergency lights
or for camping...
a gallon of water with one of those
headlamps attached!

I thought these were useful & wanted to share it...
Stay tuned for more..

Lullaby & Good Night...

There is nothing like a good night's sleep but in today's society it can be elusive with all the different forms of stress...

One way to reduce the stress in order to get a restful sleep is to create an environment that is conducive to relaxation...
Apartment Therapy has list of 6 Simple Changes
to help you sleep better...

1. A bath before bedtime with lavender essential oil added...Lavender is a wonderful herb for sleep...I add a couple drops to my pillows or add a sleep pillow inside the pillow case.......

2. Creating white noise.....
my fan is essential at night....
it is a good way to cancel out any outside noise
& I love the air circulating...
Also the Hubby can play his drums in
the basement & I do not hear a sound...

3. Cooling the room....turn your thermostat down...
you sleep better in a room with cool air...
this is where the fan will help as well...

4. Have an extra blanket for warmth....with a cooler room you will need something extra so make it comfy and beautiful.... As the article says the feeling of being "swaddled" can be very calming for the nerves...

5. A small bit of food about an hour or two before bedtime like a handful of granola, plain pasta, or dry toast can make you sleepy...must be the carbohydrates...

I will add one thing I do to creating a calm restful place....Have it a  technology free area....

No TV, no radio, no computer, no phone...
relaxing or meditation music is allowed tho...

6. Finally, make sure the bedroom is very dark...You can add curtains that block light...close doors... anything that will darken the room...Our bedroom is on the north side of the house so it is naturally low light & with any thing over the window it makes it very dark & a great place to sleep....

If you haven't tried any of these, please do so...it made a big difference for us when I made some of these changes years ago...this room has become a haven for us...

Sleep Well!

Rosemary & Sage Boot Fresheners

This herbal recipe came from Mountain Rose Blog..... Great site to visit if you love herbs....This was written with hikers in mind but it would be great  to use in sneakers, work boots & other footwear as well to get rid of any odor....

Herbal Boot Fresheners

1 lb or 2 cups of Baking Soda
40 drops Organic Rosemary Essential Oil
1 cup of Organic Sage Leaf
6 Large Cotton Muslin Bags
6 Large Paper Tea Bags (optional)

Directions

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Fill the tea bags with the mixture and then stuff inside the cotton drawstring bags. Tea bags will keep the powder from seeping out, but you can skip this step if you don’t mind a light dusting. Place one bag inside each boot. Makes enough for 3 pairs of stinky shoes and lasts up to 3 months. The baking soda will absorb the rosemary scent after a while, so feel free to add a few more drops of essential oil when needed.

Ahhhhh fresh!

Wednesday Women- Mollyockett

Mollyockett was an Abenaki healing woman who lived in the western foothills of Maine...I remember Grampa telling me how she would stop by to visit his grandfather who lived in Bethel..this would around the late 1700's ....She would visit, have something to eat, tell a few stories, give him some herbs then it was off to the next visit...

The pictures  here show how she may have looked based on the descriptions of people who knew her..
She was an herbalist & healer...she is famous for saving the life of Hannibal Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln's vice president, when he was a baby...
she arrived at his home in Paris Hill to find him very sick..she administered her healing skills & saved his life...

She traveled along the Androscoggin River from South Paris to Fryburg to Bethel to Canton...this was the part of Maine I grew up in ...Her christian name was Marie Agatha but she pronounced in "Mali Agit " which people thought was Molly Ockett...

She truly is an unforgettable character...the stories about her are numerous...so I will direct you to the Bethel Historical Society & the Wabanaki site to read the account of her life which I promise you is very entertaining and interesting...

Molly died picking blueberries on White Cap Mt in Andover Maine....a place familiar to many of us from that area for the wild Maine blueberries that grow there...I remember spending many happy times picking blueberries with my family there....I can't think of a more wonderful place to pass away especially for Molly....it truly is a beautiful area...She is buried in the Andover cemetery....no one is quite sure how old she was when she died...some guess it could be any where from 73 to 93....whatever the age Molly left her mark here in Maine.......

The small blue antique book my grandfather gave me about her life will be passed on to my kids...she may be gone but will never be forgotten.....

The two sites that I highly recommend are the following...

I hope you enjoy her story....
