Wednesday Women- The MacDonald Sisters

Margaret & Frances MacDonald are two artist sisters who had a great impact on the art world but it was overshadowed by Margaret's husband Charles Rennie Mackintosh the architect with whom Margaret worked with later on, creating some of her well known gesso panels for homes...
Margaret, Charles & Frances with her husband Herbert MacNair, were known as "The Four"  a loose collective of artistic talent that began the Glasgow school which had a huge impact on what defined Art Nouveau in the late 1800s. The women's artistic talent is said to have had an influence on the artist Gustav Klimt...not surprising when you see their work...

Some of the art of Margaret MacDonald

"In the mid 1890s the sisters left the School to set up an independent studio together. They collaborated on graphics, textile designs, book illustrations and metalwork, developing a distinctive style influenced by mysticism, symbolism and Celtic imagery. Frances also produced produced a wide variety of other artistic work, including embroidery, gesso panels and water colour paintings."
Some of the art of Francis McDonald which in my opinion was more beautiful but sadly overshadowed.. many of her works were lost when destroyed by her husband after her death...

Very magical, organic art...after reading some of their biographies, it is not hard to see
how they influenced the art world...

Thanks for Introducing me to these Amazing Sisters Art... very Art Nouveau! Love it!

Thanks also for stopping by to tour Sweet Salvage with me, tomorrow will be the Finale Post on the Adventure there and the Reveal of what I 'Scored'!

The Man is at the VA Hospital today, hopefully getting final clearance for his upcoming Surgery which is scheduled for 9-6?! The delays have been stressful and we've been anxious enough with all the risks... but you know how slow the wheels turn... *Le Sigh* Though not as slow as they predict his recovery and rehab to be... now they're saying a year or MORE?!? *yIKES*

I've always loved their work. Thanks for curating this little gallery - nice to see them all in a row. If I'm not mistaken, one of Margaret's paintings sold at auction recently - purchased by a husband for his wife who'd always admired it. I believe it was "The Heart of the Rose". Wish I had such a husband!!
