Earth Day Rant

A day to stop and make people aware or even remind them of the Earth but Wait!!!!! Aren't we reminded of our precious environment every minute of every day....the air we breathe, the nature we look upon.....
the weather we experience, the trees that clean the air and shade us, the water that hydrates, the food that nourishes, the sun that warms or the moon that soothes....They are the parts that make our Mother whole...she nurtures us and cares for us no matter what....

But we are taking a toll on her & she is hurting...badly....we take our ecological balance for granted...we take... take.... take & never give back....

The consequences of our action and inaction are rearing their ugly heads....pollution, poisoned food, water & air, killer storms & so on....

I liken it to cancer.... we can fight the cancer with an all out assault of medicine and lifestyle changes....we heal the body.... there are many people involved in that effort....But what if someone took that capability away...and you had no one & no way to fight it except with what ever small way you could...eventually that cancer would win out....

Many try the honor the Earth in a compassionate way living as close as we can to her and taking steps to eliminate toxins in our lives... though we could never completely eliminate everything that is toxic, we can use moderation, common sense and create balance...Yin & Yang....Each day we try to recycle, reuse, up-cycle & eliminate what we can...

For each of us who take those steps, we find a sense of peace in our lives and rewards from Mother Nature..Yin & Yang.....and for each person that changes their way of living, the grid that heals the environment widens...

But the Governments of the world, corporations and large farming giants like Monsanto need to step up to the plate...they need to stop their all out assault of poisoning our natural home.... From China with their horrendous lack of environmental laws to the Gulf of Mexico which today is still so incredibly polluted and deadly from the oil spill two years ago, (this one is for you, Lori )
"a backdrop of recently published scientific studies indicating sick and dying dolphins, coral and other sea life, and bacteria-laden tar balls washing onto beaches."
to the destruction of Rain Forest that safeguard lifesaving medicinal remedies...

 Rachel Carson
It takes a village to raise a child...well it takes a world to save the Earth....The cry was sounded early on by Rachel Carson, an amazing woman,  and many others after that...but unfortunately, many today, scoff at those who try to sound the alarm... of Global Warming as Liberal BS...

I am not going to list the things you can do because many who read my blog and who I follow already know what to do and there are millions of sites that can be visited....

My question for this day is more of an existentialist thought.... why are we not further along in our behavior towards the environment?

I feel it is because we are not changing or eliminating other toxic aspects of our lives such as racism, abuse of children & animals, misogyny. Of looking down on different religions, marriage equality, ethnic diversity & the poor.... Of turning a blind eye to lies, deception, manipulation, and unethical behavior whether on personal or national levels...If this cancerous, dismissive attitude exists, it is no surprise that nature would be included....If we are not utilizing what is morally right ( and I include Christians in this) or paying attention to scientific data then where do we turn so everyone is on board???

Maybe it is just as simple as this.....Let us remember that this precious gift called Earth is on loan to us from our children....what will we leave them?

So that is my opinion & I appreciate you listening to it...I would love to hear what you think....

Linda , All you said here is true and accurate and it is a complex problem , with no one simple single solution . I do know two major contributors however to helping to obstruct what we need to address immediately as not only a nation but as a planet. The first being the major corporations like oil, gas and chemical manufacturers ~ they are extremely powerful and have enormous resources at their disposal(i.e. money and lobbyists and numerous politicians in their pockets) it is not in their vested interest to allow anything to stand in their way of making vast amounts of money~ they also snow many people with their half truth ads on t.v. saying they 'care ' about the environment and then site one small concession they may have made to something 'green". There is also a pervasive attitude long held mostly by Western culture, predominantly white males, that man holds dominion over the earth and therefore can do with it as he sees fit~ taking , abusing and using as much as he likes for whatever he wishes ~ no foresight involved at all ~ only the immediate gratification or financial rewards ~ never considering the devastation he is wrecking . This thinking has gone on for 100's of years , and in stark contrast to native people's who through ages of observation of living in the natural world , know that you must take as little as required and leave the rest so nature can function as it was meant to~ to flow with it, not shape and mold it to your will without thought of what will suffer as a consequence. One has to feel real reverence and connection to the earth which makes our very survival at all possible. It never ceases to amaze and infuriate me that so many people are either blind to this or worse, simply do not care because they choose not to see it and only care about the material gain . With so many people living in cities and children playing outside less and less , it is small wonder that people feel no connection for what should enrich their lives but is also the one thing that must be healthy in order for them to exist at all. Sorry if I have gone on too long here~ I am afraid I could go on longer as am passionate about this. I am very glad you chose to write at length about it but always feel the people who are listening are the ones who already know how vital it is and the one's who ignore (at their and our peril) are not listening and even if approached on the subject always counter with "jobs' must come first" or simply deny there is anything wrong in the first place. Some very interesting research done about the differences in the 'liberal brain and the very conservative brain. Very real genetic differences' and worth reading. Thank you again for all the beauty and truth you bring to your readers.

Thanks everyone for the great comments...Valkrye....so well said!! I agree that the ones who should pay attention to this sadly do not.. or they just give lip service to it...I was disturbed to find in my email Earth Day "sales"...I felt that this has just become another victim to commercialism ...the initial purpose when this start in the 70's was to focus on the earth...I fear that has been lost...I am going to check out that research on the liberal & conservative brain...very interesting concept... Thanks for your thoughts on this...:)

Linda, Will send you a link if you wish, to at least one good source of the liberal vs conservative brain~ and glad you also brought up the point which has also exasperated me, the cashing in on anything allegedly 'green' ~(most of the items far from being environmentally responsible) It always gets back to that ugly reality of the system being entirely set up to encourage yet more consumerism. The endless (seemingly) single focus. I think you probably are a soul sister~ having read so many of your posts ~ our perspective is so aligned on so many issues and subjects. I remember being so excited to discover your blog~ love that you do not shy away at all from issues that might be considered by some to be controversial but to my way of thinking , a real need to air and discuss in a free and open way what are issues that are so important to all of us . But love too that you share what nourishes the spirit and our need for beauty as well!

Thanks for those kind words...you and others that have read my blog have been very supportive on some of the issues that I have talked about...which is nice for a change...I have ruffled many feathers & been put down for it...will it keep me quiet....OH hell no!!! but I always seem to find a circle of soul mates who are like minded...I actually have been holding back somewhat on this blog but another like minded sista has the right idea and started a blog to vent which is great ...Oh Ya? Well blog this...you need to check it out... send me that link I would like to read it...Thanks V :)

Hello again Linda, Thank you for the blog link ~ I will certainly go and take a look at it. We need all the like-minded folks we can find if we expect to get the word out and change what needs changing . Here are a couple of links for you to peruse when you have the time re: conservative brain ( the research is not of course set in stone and am sure other factors contribute to the type of thinking most often associated with it) Here are two sites~ one which discusses the research as far as it goes and the other , longer article more about personality differences in general which makes people see the same issue differently http://www.alternet.org/teaparty/154940/understanding_the_ideological_divide_between_liberals_and_conservatives%3A_is_it_possible_for_us_to_get_along/?page=entire http://reason.com/archives/2012/04/10/born-this-way/singlepage These might give you a little insight into the subject but perhaps not a lot of comfort since all studies show it does not matter whether one is an educated conservative or uneducated when it comes to opinion and the likelihood of changing it via reason and logic. Perhaps not impossible, but doubtful or at least very difficult. See what you think. All the best to you.

Thanks V... that was a VERY interesting article it explained alot of things that I suspected but wasn't sure about...I am going to look into the other research... and your right it is not very comforting... disturbing is more the word...
