The Human Be In

source

An event that occurred on January 14 1967...the phrase Human be-in was coined by Michael Bowen who combined humanist values with the sit-ins occurring during that time..He was the one most instrumental in organizing the event...along with Allen Cohen...

Influential people at that time
such as Alan Ginsberg

Lenore Kandel were there
as well as Gary Snyder & Dick Gregory
speaking to the crowds that had gathered...

source
The word "psychedelic" was introduced... Timothy Leary made his first appearance along with his phrase "Tune in Turn On & Drop Out"

20,000  0r 30,000 people came, no one can make sure of the exact number but it was so peaceful that police presence was never needed....

It was the event that triggered the influx of some 100,000 young people into Haight Ashbury district for the Summer of Love...It was a precursor to Woodstock...

The event was organized to bring together the Berkeley radicals who took a more militant stance especially against the Vietnam conflict..and the hippies who believed in peaceful protest...they had the same goals just different means of getting there......

It was a questioning of  society's norms...it focused on questioning those values...it was the Counter Culture...focus was more on women's rights, civil rights, stepping outside the boundaries of convention to explore different religions, sexual mores, psychedelic drugs ....

Bands such as Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service & The grateful Dead played...

It was also a time when communal living became popular promoting ecological awareness...

I have posted some links in addition to the links above in the post...There are many more pictures and first hand accounts to those of you who are interested in reading more...

Such a magical time. I'm always sad that it was before my time and I missed out on such great moments. My mom and dad have amazing stories.

I wish people today were like they were then. Occupy comes close, but not close enough, in my opinion. More people need to stand up. But for so many it's easier just to sit down and be told what to do.

Great write up!!

It was a magical time and it was a moment in time.. unfortunately it is gone and what I see going on in this country now is very disheartening...back then we had hope for something better, more of an acceptance of our individuality and diversity but it seems that intolerance, racism & sexism continues to rear its ugly head & is a live and well in the USA :(

i love this~i was born some months before this happened and half a world away but i always remember something said by derek taylor...that you can always pick out those born in 1967...i am one of those!
reading this made me think of the occupy movement and other activist groups world wide and it feels like the same kind of thing is happening again. ohhh another gathering would be amazing!

I agree...I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this happen in the future...and the Occupy movements do remind me of the 60's...It is nice to see what good humans can be capable of when they want to...
