The Holiday Season

My favorite time of the year has arrived...the holiday season is a special time but for many it just makes their situation of economic woes much more pronounced. Everywhere you look the push towards materialism is running amok...the holiday seems to get lost under the yoke of capitalism...and the need for material items drives people to engage in despicable behavior...

I try to focus on the essence of the holiday..So I am going to post on things of that nature...decorating with what you have, fun things to do and homemade gifts, etc.

But the most important thing I want to start with is those who are going through economic troubles and need help not just through the holiday but until things get better... Maine is now #1 in New England for 1 in 4 children having food insecurity...

During the holidays if you can possibly do so please donate to one of your local charities.....there are two sites that you can check out the rating of charities as well as find one in your area... Give.org & Charity Navigator.

Just donating 10.00 can go along way for many charities...I hope you will think about doing so this holiday season...

These are my favorite places to donate..

Operation Homefront  a place where soldier can go to ask for assistance...you can donate to a specific soldier who has requested assistance or donate to your local area...This is really worth checking out....and helping out our veterans is a must in my opinion...

Marine Toys For Tots ..... a worthy cause without having to explain why...

Good Shepard Food Bank.... This food bank distributes food to all the Maine soup kitchens, shelters and churches who provide food for those struggling in this economy...for every dollar donated, they can distribute $8.00 worth of food..They are trying to reach their goal of 200,000 so please think of donating.

Please donate to your local Animal Shelter...we cannot forget to help out our little animal friends...
For Maine, I would also suggest Maine Friends of Animals... they take on the legislative and political action necessary to help protect all animals in Maine.

Please give your self a gift...donate to those less fortunate..

Woody Allen

I watched the PBS American Masters series Sunday night on Woody Allen. Part 2 airs tonight at 9:00 for my area...click the link to find out when it plays in your area...It is very entertaining!!

The man is pure genius with film...Maybe it is his use of language or commentary on social situations that plague us on a daily basis that can be so captivating ....but whatever it is, his recipe is perfect!! You either love him or you don't...

This is a list of my favorite movies...the first two are my all time favorites but I love them all...

Enjoy!!!

Chicken Coops ???

This is where our girls live..They have a place of honor at the end of my storage shed...they are snug in there..My husband just added the "porch" in the back.... another room so they can move around this winter..We have it insulated, but hope to get the outside finished off in the spring....

The ladies in their home...

Their "Dr Seuss" ladder out back...

My husband was saying the other day how comfortable we try to make our chickens and how "upscale " their condo is  *lol* ... I told him he wouldn't believe some of the places people build for their chickens...

So I thought it would be interesting to see some of the unusual chicken homes out there...the quote  "flew the coop" would not apply to these delightful abodes!!

This first coop is what I would love to have for the girls... tho I would have an opening in back wall open for easy cleaning...

The first four pictures courtesy of Homestead Revival

Love this one too!!
Who says a chicken coop can't be beautiful!!

The chicken coop  at The Fancy Farmgirl is a must see!!!   My question is how on earth does she keep it so clean!!

Hope you enjoyed the tiny home tour!!

DIY Friday!! Recycling Newspaper...

I am always looking for really nice ways to gift wrap...I enjoy that more than giving the gift itself...unless the gift is handmade too..This is one of the prettiest use of newspaper gift wrapping I have come across... and it is just newspaper, food dye & a dash of glitter!!

Here is the link for the how to... I think I will definitely be using it this year!!  Simple, cost effective (we can all appreciate that), and a great way to recycle...

~The House of Magic~

If you have not seen the movie "Practical Magic" you really need to...The star of the show is the house!!  *Sorry Sandra*  It is gorgeous!!

 that porch<3

This little cabin was apparently built on the site also but unfortunately we do not see it in the film...
The sketches of the house...apparently it was built on a platform because the site was an Indian burial site so no digging was allowed...

The book takes place in New England but the filming was done in San Juan park in Washington and the room scenes were filmed on sets in LA..

The kitchen is the room I cannot get enough of.... this is why there are so many pictures of this room!!  ..Big spacious and homey!! It is the heart of the home

 and the pantry....

The Dining Room...

The attic...

The conservatory...a must have!!

Though we are now in a downsizing mode...I can see three of the rooms in a small house on one floor...My hubby and I discuss and plan all the time...it has to do with how much "magical" thinking you have ;)

The following links have all the pictures you see here and even more especially Amas Veritas which is a site all about the movie...

5 Senses Tour

Continuing the tour with Bohemian Twilight!! Indulge your senses!!

Movie: Woody Allen's
"Bullets over Broadway"
I LOVE Woody Allen movies and have quite a collection.. This is one I highly recommend...very entertaining and funny!!!

Food:  "Beef" Stew

This has all the taste of a meat stew without the meat...my husband is a big meat eater but I do manage to get him to eat a vegetarian meal once in a while...He loves this one....and it is so good with homemade biscuits!!!

The secret ingredient is the wheat gluten...the Westsoy is the brand I use.... you can get this at Whole Foods...(please forgive the quality of the pics)

This is a simple receipe...I cut the cubes up even smaller as they tend to swell in the liquid and will give you more bites...Then brown them up a little in a small amount of oil...

Then I  precook the vegetables..Basic veggies are  2 large potatoes, 1/2 cup peas, 2 carrots cut up, 1/2 small onion. But I always use something different like a parsnip, some turnip or broccoli once in a while for variety..

Then I make a sauce from 2 cups water( that I cooked the veggies in), 4 Tblsp cornstarch and a touch of Gravy Master......Add right to the gluten bits and thicken...then add your veggies...

It is delicious and warms you up on the cold night!

Book: Frankenstein by Mary Shelly

Read this from a psychological view...I took a English Literature class in which the professor gave us a completely different view of this book...The movies do not come close to how great this book is....

Music:   Loreena McKennitt 's Book of Secrets
What a fantastic album...you can hear many different influences but the Celtic sounds are what I enjoy the most...in fact I have yet to hear one of her songs I did not like!!  A very talented lady....

Design: Big Baggy Sweaters.. nothing better <3

Enjoy!!
