The Love of Books

We now live in an age where technology has given us Kindle. I do agree there are many aspects to this that are beneficial. You can buy or rent school books which for the college student is a huge savings...I downloaded the Kindle App for my computer from Amazon and got many of my books for my British Lit class free. There is also the added environmental reason of not cutting down trees to make more books which I agree is good. There are still plenty of books out there to reuse or "rebook".

But there is just something about a book...touching it....seeing the written word on paper....the artwork inside and out....even the musty fragrance of the pages. There are just some things Kindle will never capture...

Reading is a time of slowing down....something our society has an extremely hard time doing... So as we eliminate the things that teach us to take the time, to focus on quality and appreciate things more, we are losing out immensely. To me, it is the same thing in eliminating Cursive Writing from our school curriculum...It has to do with a personal connection.

There is also a sentimental connection. I have some of my Grandmother's and they are treasures...she passed on the love of books to me....Some of my favorite gifts have been books, many I still have from childhood...

I love books.. So I hope these images express how important and beautiful books truly are....we should not take these things for granted...

The next three photos are tiny books used as jewelry
by one of my favorite artisans Luthien Thye

Even the covers themselves can be
beautiful works of art.....

This Labor Day weekend spend some quiet time
in your favorite spot with a good book.

~~~Peace ~~~
A New Look for Terracotta
I like an World look for my Terracotta pots... it is fun to create it.... and very simple...
Just take some spackling compound that you use to repair holes in the wall and cover the pot...Then with a plastic baggie on your hand make textures and swirls to your liking...take a stick or nail and make marks or designs in the putty...
I also make polymer clay stamped pieces such as this Sun design or Chinese coins and embed them in....let this dry overnight....
I then make a weak tea of antiquing glaze, paint it on, then take a damp cloth and lightly wipe it off leaving the lines and crevices darker...
I also add some antiqued cheesecloth along the top edge because I like lots of texture ...
There are many things that could be done with this to suit your style and liking...Hope this inspires you to try one...It is a lot of fun and a great way to reuse any left over putty...
These pots are decorative only and I would not use them outside. If you add a plant, I would highly suggest putting it in a plastic pot to insert inside. The putty is not water proof and will crumble if a plant is potted straight in... the only downside to this.
( I usually put my plants into plastic pots anyway because it hold the water better.)
Howard Zinn
Today would have been Howard Zinn's 89th birthday....He was a social activist, historian, academic and author. He wrote over 20 books, particularly on the Anti-War and Civil Rights movements. His book, A People's History of the United States, was the most well-known, influencing many. It is a book that should be in every school.
Click the links to read more about him and his work.
A book and Documentary called "You can't be Neutral on a Moving Train" is about his life and work.
RIP.. your voice will be missed...
