Turquoise- Gem of the Gods

I have always loved Turquoise. When I lived in Oklahoma in the 70's I used to buy turquoise jewelry set in silver from a Native American from the reservation. The price was very low as it was considered Hippy jewelry and not for the "fashion-conscious"....I do wish I still had those pieces.

I did a little reserach and found out how highly prised this stone was by the Aztecs, from whom I am descended. I thought it was interesting and wanted to share what I found...

The Aztecs called it chalchihuitl... and used it extensively to decorate their ceremonial masks along with other precious stones.

The earliest use of turquoise is found in Egypt.

The word is from the Old French meaning "Turkish".

This gem has been esteemed as a holy stone bringing the wearer good fortune.

"Turquoise has been considered as jewelry and an art-stone by Native American Aztecs. The Aztecs believed in the natural beauty of turquoise, and for them, turquoise stones have natural sense of royalty, perfect to be worn by a great and powerful tribe. They also believed that the turquoise has a very natural charm. Apart from its beauty, the Aztecs believed that the turquoise has magical properties that can make someone feel better or recover from sickness. This was one reason why the turquoise was also a favorite offering to their gods. The Aztecs asked their gods to give them good health."

"The Aztecs do not only believe of the turquoise’s healing power but also of its essence to provide strength and prosperity. Before attacking another tribe, the Aztecs made arrowheads from turquoise for accuracy. In fact, the Aztecs placed higher regard on turquoise than on gold. The ancient Aztecs carved holes in their teeth and used turquoise for decoration."

Although one site said that the "gemstone was so revered in ancient Mexico that mere mortals were not permitted to wear it. Turquoise was reserved for the Gods."

Turquoise can change color due to the effects of light, chemicals or acidity of a person's skin. There is a medieval legend that says the gem will fade around an unhealthy person and regain its color around a healthy one.

Turquoise is a soft stone so it is usually treated with wax so that it hardens and becomes more durable.

Some of the Mystical Qualities:

Strength, protection from harm, psychic sensitivity and connection to the spirit world
If given a turquoise by a loving friend, that stone would protect the wearer from negative energy and bring good fortune. The turquoise is the symbol of friendship. It also brings peace to the home.

This stone is a very personal and meaningful stone to one who wears it. Turquoise takes on the characteristics of the owner.

Turquoise carries great wisdom of basic truth within it. It is one of the oldest stones known. This is a stone that a person must learn to attune to instead of the stone attuning to the person. It is important that the owner of a Turquoise give it the proper attention.
