Make Your Own Rose Water

Absolutely love this time of the year....Especially when the roses are blooming.... The fragrance can take any problem away....spending time near these beautiful plants is therapeutic...Maybe that's why the girls take their dust baths underneath them...Nature is medicinal... We should never take it for granted & fight to preserve it...
We can preserve it for when the long winter months arrive again....  That is what I have been doing...taking my colander & walking around gathering rose petals as well rose buds to dry...nice in a tub...

So after you gather them, dig out some nice jars or bottles.....then add...

3 Parts of Witch Hazel or Vodka
1 Part distilled water'
Rose petals  (the more fragrant the better)

Mix & set in a cool dry place for at least 3 weeks.
Strain & add back to your bottles or an atomizer
if you used Vodka to spritz on after a bath...

I did both versions....Next year I am going to try the steam distillation method ...
Enjoy!!

DIY Friday - The Insect Hotel

My project for this weekend....an Insect Hotel...I have been collecting all kinds of things from hay to bamboo to twigs...Tomorrow the Hubby is going to find me some boards to make the frame,,,, The more I find out what is happening to bees & insects of all kinds the more we should be working to protect them....Corporations like Monsanto are poisoning them with the horrendous amounts of pesticides that they saturate their food crops with...We should be following other countries in banning the Monsanto Corporation from ever growing the mutations they call food... Anything that you can do to provide a place for insects to thrive benefit not only them but your plants, gardens & Nature at large... The hotels can
be anything from the simplest of  things....

to the most elaborate....
I will post my hotel when its finished...

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world;
indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

The Return

Hello everyone...I have returned...what started off as a forced hiatus with my computer crashing just as the winter storms began turned into a  voluntary one from the tech world.... I have been reading Zen Habits for quite a while now & Leo Babauta has written on the subject of taking breaks from the Internet...so I decided that it was a good opportunity...it turned into a bit longer than intended but I have to tell you I really enjoyed it.....  I spent my time doing a lot more reading..... currently reading Rosemary Gladstar's, Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health...... meditations & Yoga, journaling, lifestyle changes, streaming some favorite British series on Netflix & feeding the wildlife especially during those long storms...

So here is my DIY Friday project... on Sunday... my Smudge Fan... the handle comes from the woods & I carved vines & leaves on it. ,,,I also added a crystal to the handle... I am debating whether I like the streamers....The turkey feathers graciously provided by the flock of turkeys that hung out with us during the winter... They left me quite a few on the front lawn....

& they provided hours  of entertainment for us...this was the last time we saw the flock together  50 all together ...before they headed back into the woods & disbanded... It was quite a display...

Now the winter is over & the Perennials are blooming...like my Harrison Gold...an amazing antique rose..One thing about living in Maine the winters make you appreciate the beauty that comes after....I certainly am....

I will say I can deal with snow storms much better than floods & tornadoes that are occurring in the Midwest...Having lived in Oklahoma for a few years & experiencing tornadoes & dust-storms thankfully no floods....I can appreciate what they are going through...so I am keeping everyone in my thoughts & prayers that the storms are finally coming to an end...

I am also happy to be back here as well....
refreshed & ready to share some of my thoughts, projects & changes.. ...

Blessings to all...Have a wonderful week...

If You Build it, They Will Come...

My youngest Step Granddaughter, Ivy Karma, always ask me this question as she comes in the door...
Is the fairy house ok?...
We had some damage last summer to one so I decided to build a couple for her to see that the Woodland fairies have safe shelter from the storms...So here is the first one...We has so much fun with this we are going to build a town...
With the Hubby's help I think we have a nice piece of real estate for the wee ones...
Please forgive the picture quality, my camera did a dance down my stairs & is no more..So I have to rely on my phone temporarily......
I wanted  a chimney for this one something a little Dr Seuss-like
& I think the Hubby did a wonderful job on it & he cut me a nice slab for the base....
Everything is from the woods except for the chimney & cedar shingles for the roof...
The mushrooms have a slight coffee stain & I used some dried Kale to give them a mossy look..
I crumbled the mica & spread that around for fairy dust...
The roof has pine cones, birch bark & moss...
My favorite part is the fairy ring...made from acorn caps & mica.....

& it is true....If you build it, they will come... :)

 Have a magical weekend...

Whipped Body Butter...

It has been my project month,....Instead of resolutions, I like to set long & short term goals...1 month, 3 month & 6 month.... I find I accomplish so much more doing it this way....
January is my "Finish the little projects by the 31st or get rid of them" ....These are small projects that have been hanging around waiting for me to get to them...

One of these projects was making this recipe of Body Butter I found here at Mama Dweeb... This time of year with the weather so cold & my skin dries out fast, especially my hands, so a little moisturizing help is called for....I just tweaked her recipe a bit ....adding my own Rose Oil instead...

Whipped Body Butter

1-3/4 cups Shea butter (unrefined is best)
1/2 cup Coconut oil (extra virgin is best)
1/4 cup organic Rose Oil
therapeutic grade Essential Oils

Measure out shea butter and coconut oil & melt over heat in a double broiler,( I put mine in the stainless bowl I did the whipping in after so it was one bowl start to finish).... put the bowl on a cutting board & let it cool for 30 minutes... then I stirred in my own Rose oil I made last summer & a few drops of  Patchouli EO...

You can cover it & put it in the freezer for about 20-30 minutes, or refrigerate for 1-2 hours which is what I did & did some chores while waiting...  the mixture will start to solidify but not completely harden, it will look like soft wax....
Then I just whipped it up  until soft and fluffy & put it in these little jars I picked up after canning season...I made about 2.5 cups of butter....
It smells & feels heavenly....
the Hubby loved it so much he got a jar of it......

A couple of troubleshooting tips from Mama Dweeb :

"If the mixture won’t whip or stay whipped, you need to chill it longer.
If the mixture has lumps in it after you’ve whipped it, let it set to soften a bit and then try again.
Store in a cool area and if your home gets above 75°F regularly, you may want to keep it in the refrigerator.

Hopefully, I will have a little project that the Hubby helped me with to post tomorrow...
something for the wee folk...

Winter Terrarium Update....

My wooden mushrooms didn't work out well...they kept developing mold on them so I went  with some balancing rocks...It works quite well....I am going to look around for some real mushrooms to plant in there...

Winter Terrarium- Part 3

Well I finally got my container...with a sales coupon at Michael's  & I love it.... I put it together last week...& it seems to get greener & more lush with each passing day....So far it seems to be thriving in  the light from the East window...
It has three types of moss...some Baby's Tears. an Asparagus fern, Handmade wooden mushrooms by the Hubby. some rocks, Micah,  a couple of miniature quartz crystals & a wooden stick I call Merlin's Staff.

I laid gravel first, then some  horticultural charcoal to absorb toxins,
then organic potting soil with peat in it for the base.,...
Now on to part 4 ....the wooden top...I am using a glass plate temporarily to keep the moisture in...
The Hubby is going to make it & I am thinking of carving on it...But that will have to wait until after the holidays....I am getting ready for the family Christmas party this Saturday so I am busy making gifts...some I will post later...& lots of cooking... Until then have a great week!!

DIY Friday- Lampshade

Wow It has been awhile....sorry for the absence....things have been pretty hectic but then it all seemed to quiet down by Thanksgiving...& I actually have all my presents ready except for a couple more handmade ones the Hubby & I are making for family...It actually has been pretty nice this season but then I try not to go out into the stores too much which helps....

So I have this antique lamp...I love it but have had a hard time finding a shade I like....then by chance I put an old egg basket on it while moving things around.....

 Voila!!!  I found my shade,.,.,,,
& it is wide enough to accommodate both lights...

So some left over black fabric ripped into one inch wide strips
 to weave through the bars.

& knotted together...
not too many lengths or it gets harder to weave....

It is all tied so its a no-sew project....over & under...
I went back & tucked all the knots in, straightened some of the fabric
& finished it off around the bottom...
& if you get tired of it you can  change it by pulling the strips out...

The Hubby loves this...It  really gives off a nice mood lighting in the living room...
It is hard to tell in this picture but it looks like a fabric basket...& I really love the black....
& its recycled...

An update on the Winter Terrarium....I put the moss in some potting soil while looking for a container & its thriving very well...But FINALLY I found a glass container I like at Michael's...I am getting it Sunday at the 20% off sale... So next week I will be posting the finished product... Stay tuned...

Have a great weekend!!
