Winter Terrarium... Part Two.. Moss Quarantine...

So today I went on a moss expedition....
Isn't this stump magical!!
Woodland Fairies dance here at night...

I got some beautiful pieces....waiting until after that good soaking rain was the best thing to do.... I was able to get four different types ..

Haircap Moss...

Pincushion Moss (with some Haircap)

Fork Moss.....

Sheet Moss... I love this because it really
 does come up in sheets...
There is enough moss to make my two terrariums & some small ones for Christmas gifts...I harvest sustainably...taking only small pieces here & there...you would never know I had taken any.... I take a spatula with me so all you have to do is slide it under the moss & lift it up & deposit it into a bag...
easy peasy....
When I got home I placed the moss in a large bowl of water & let it soak for a few minutes...then gently run it under some water to remove most of the dirt, rocks, tiny twigs, etc...you would be surprised how much comes out....

then gently squeeze it to remove most of the water...I put them in a plastic container & bags leaving it partially open for air circulation...

I have them sitting in a East facing window...very little sun but lots of light....now begins the watch...I have a mister that I put distilled water in so if the moss looks like it is drying out I will give it a squirt...  For the next two weeks, I will watch for any sprouts or bugs that come up... I am so glad to have  found the  Fern & Mossery post on this step... My last terrarium probably would have looked so much better...
Tomorrow I am picking up the organic potting soil & some gravel....Then it is just finding the right container ...so the hunt is on....I will keep you posted on what goes on for the next two weeks....

Have a great week...

The Winter Terrarium .... Part One

ferns in quarantine

I am preparing for winter....It will be a green one this year...I am once again making a terrarium for my living space.....if I am to be surrounded by white landscape outside, I will have my little green oasis to gaze upon inside....I have made terrariums before that managed to last at least through the winter but just barely...

So now I am getting serious...I want them to last years...so I have been researching...planning & buying supplies....The first thing I ordered was a bag of charcoal....to absorb the impurities ... I have a small batch of white river stones that are clean & ready...... Yesterday I went out scouting for some decent moss which I found a nice batch......I will be harvesting the crop tomorrow after the good soaking it is getting today.....I also found some tiny ferns in the woods that are in quarantine as you see in the picture above.......

& I ordered some Soleirolia soleirolii aka Baby Tears to add...  I love this plant because another name for it is "mind your own business"...too funny....

Now to get some organic potting soil & some small gravel  which I can get at the local plant shop....  I am adding three small wooden mushrooms the Hubby turned out for me on the lathe ...  I am thinking a small Buddha in the other as it will be placed in my sacred space area.... The final piece (s) to the puzzle...the glass containers... I am looking for something really special & unique for the living room.... so far this one is on my wish list.... Bubble terrariums blown from recycled glass...so beautiful & so expensive...
well I can dream....

So the collection of the ingredients :
stones & gravel
charcoal
organic potting soil with peat moss
sphagnum moss to keep soil from settling into the rocks...
moss, ferns & plants
statue or small items for decorations...
glass containers...

& quarantine of the plants are  the first order of business.......This is so important to make sure any mold or dead plants are removed as well as any little bugs that creep out...this ensures healthy plants when you put your terrarium together...  I think if I had added this step my last terrarium would have lasted...

I also found this site which has some great information on terrariums & putting them together for anyone interested.......

The next post will be on the quarantine process......

Happy weekend everyone...

Autumn is Here...

Happy Autumn Equinox everyone!!  & a New Moon as well.... It fits in with what the Hubby & I  are doing at the present moment....My goodness I did not realize I had been away from here so long... I hope everyone had a good summer....ours was busy.....it has been the summer of purging & we REALLY cleaned out....I would say at least two rooms full....It was either sold, donated, taken to the dump or burned in the many bonfires this summer with friends who are doing the same thing..
..
Its fitting that the New Moon has coincided with the Autumn Equinox....I have to say this time of the year as well as this Luna cycle is my favorite ... it is a time of ending ... of finishing up... releasing & cleansing...I have found over the past year that following the cycles of the moon as well as meditation keeps me in check from letting projects, situations or relationships get over whelming preventing me from moving forward ....it is a time to re-focus on the future... "Feeling stuck" is something I have not felt in a long time....

An excerpt from my favorite... Mystic Mamma:

"In this planetary moment of transition, as we move from one season into the next, let’s take the time to pause and release all our energy that has been tied into the past. It’s time to step into our future, and use all the realizations and lessons we have learned thus far to propel us into a new place and a new experience of being!"

I like that ....How about you?

Page Scores Again...

My Hubby is the best...He always keeps his eyes open for things he knows I like...for example wicker ...
So I was SO excited when he came home from the recycle /transfer station with this gem....it is in great shape except for a bit of mold on the bottom...but the thing that surprised me was it was wicker not plastic....I couldn't believe someone would get rid of it....but I am very glad they did!!! So tomorrow I am scrubbing this down with Dr Bronner's soap then a spray of vinegar & a spray of tea tree oil...then a good sit in the sun should do the trick....

I find that for everything we give to someone else to either help or we no longer use, we get back something that is more in line with our taste...
When you put something out there, the Universe will  definitely respond when the time is right...

45 Years ago today.....

Wow  I did not realize I have been gone so long... I hope everyone has had a good summer...it has been busy for us... we have been busy with the house this year getting things painted, fixed & ready ....Now I am working on a couple heirloom quilts for my daughter & grand-daughter.... I am also working on the blue wing-back chair to FINALLY  finish up now that I have a treadle sewing machine again...  given to me by a good friend...Why I ever gave up mine I will never know, but the Universe  heard my request for another one & answered.. actually I am getting an electric one as well...so it answered two-fold for which I am very grateful not only for the sewing machines but for my wonderful friend as well..... So I will be posting the finished results down the road......

Today is the 45th anniversary  of the Woodstock Music Festival....  we have plans to get down to New York for the 50th with a few friends....& yes!!!  we will all be going...... we have made up our minds ... Have a beautiful weekend everyone.......

Love Peace & Music...

Creative Spaces

It looks like I will be taking a break from the bedroom...we were going to do a temporary fix on the floor but then we found some wood in the form  of a small horse barn that had fallen apart...so we think we might be able to salvage enough for a floor, hopefully two, which would be great!! So while we are getting that together, I am going to get my craft room together..I cannot find a thing.....So I will be back to post some more of the Bohemian Decor posts...as well as a Chicken Chronicle...it has been awhile since I reported on the girls...So this one is one on some creative spaces I find inspiring... the more rustic the better in my books!!

Enjoy your week & stay creative no matter what form it is...

Wednesday Women- Viola Liuzzo

Viola Liuzzo was a 39 year old mother of 5....a social activist Unitarian Universalist & a member of the Detroit chapter of the NAACP
who saw the vicious beatings on TV happening in Alabama on Bloody Sunday &  so she traveled  down from Detroit Michigan to Selma to take part in the marches...

On March 21 1965, as she was driving a 19 yr old  black activist, Leroy Moton, to Selma, 4 members of The Klan drove up next to her  & shot her... Moton survived by pretending to be dead....

These vicious killers were quickly arrested.........One of the 4 Klan murderers was an FBI informant, Gary Rowe, who gave testimony against the others...despite lawsuits brought against him later by her family, Rowe was unfortunately acquitted... She was the only white woman killed by the Klan

It is thought by many that her death brought about the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965...Her name is inscribed on a Civil Rights memorial in Montgomery Alabama...

In 2004 a documentary called Home of The Brave  was made telling her story & the effects it had on her children......

She stood up for what she believed in....She stood up for what was right...  She died for those beliefs...another victim of the racism & hatred that existed then & still does today...
Today is the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil rights Act of 1964..... We should never forget those who died & what they died for....

The Blue Bedroom... Part One

So I couldn't wait to post how the walls came out...We LOVE  how the room is coming out...I am so glad I decided to go dark in this room...

I cleared the room out...remove the base board & trim around the window...This room had a color wash already on it...so I used a medium blue with a primer in it.....It covered beautifully... everything walls, ceiling & closet...

Now to make the wall stencil .. Finding free stencil templates online is a snap...I used this stencil template here...I got a few pieces of 14 ml mylar on Ebay here.. enough to make 2 or 3 stencils...I have more plans for stencils...You want 14 ml for the walls as they are very sturdy & stand up to joint compound.......Raised plaster wall stencils are expensive, so if you can make it yourself it helps ...

14 ml is very thick so cutting through this is tough but having a Hubby who is a machinist helps...he made me a tip to fit into my wood burning tool that cut right through the plastic...I left the edges rough because that was what I was going for especially with plaster..... but you could sand them down to make a smoother look...

Then time to tape it to the wall....I used joint compound tinted with some light blue...I put a coat on a little over 1/4 inch....then just slowly pull it it away starting from the top & this is the result....
 a raised stencil...

I put them on randomly... You will want to rinse the stencil off every so often...any smudges just wipe away... Then I started the next layer...the dark blue glazing...

This is rolled on then sponge off so it gets a mottled aged  look... I also wanted the stencils to be very subtle on the wall...

If you notice I left a bit of the light blue showing through...just enough to give the stencil a bit of relief...

Then in the corners I darkened it with the dark blue paint...I found that tip over at India pied-à-terre a great place for all kinds of DIY for the home...

It has a cool, calm feel to it & the double windows let in just enough light to give it a cozy feel...
Now I am finishing the closet &  we are doing something temporary to the floor until we find the wood we want so I can't wait to see how it turns out.... So stay tuned for Part two!!
